Wind’s Rainbow Gathering 2011 – July 3 Talk from Harold Shinsato on Vimeo.

As you may know, in 1972 the prophetic sign of the white buffalo calf appeared on the mountain during the very first Rainbow Family Gathering. That year the Rainbow Nation gathered for the first time in Colorado and overnight it had snowed and then rained, partially melting the snow. When they awoke they saw the shape of a white buffalo calf in the remaining snow on the mountainside. This was in fulfillment of a Hopi Prophecy which says that:

“The great-great grandchildren of the white conqueror would grow their hair long and rebel against society, travel east and west, gather in the mountains under the symbol of the White Buffalo. They would dance, sing and chant in many tongues. Their symbol would be the dove. They would be Brothers and Sisters to the Hopi — people of peace. They would come and go, yet be a sign that the Spirit is returning.”

Now, a buffalo calf doesn’t look the same as a grown buffalo. Its back is straight and its legs are longer relative to its size, and fairly straight. So it was definitely the image of a buffalo calf and not a grown buffalo that they saw on the mountain that day thirty-six years ago.

Here is a prophecy from the ancient Stregherian tradition that seems related to the fact that this Rainbow Covenant is now 36 years old:

“When the Age of the Daughter replaces that of the Son, then shall She appear. She will be thirty-six, and She will come in power.” – Prophecy from Aradia[*]

Similar to the Native American teaching that we have passed through several ages, the prophet Aradia taught that we had the age of the Mother, the Father and the Son and now comes the Age of the Daughter which is regarded as the final age to dawn upon the earth. The designation of “daughter” corresponds with the prophecy of the female white buffalo calf, i.e. a “daughter” buffalo.

Aradia said: “When the Age of the Daughter replaces that of the Son, then she shall appear who is to establish Reason. And she will be thirty-six at this time.[†] And she will come in Power, for the Silent Prophet will have established the way. As this age progresses great trial and tribulation shall befall the people of all nations. And out of the ashes shall arise the new World of Reason. People shall no longer be ruled by governments. Nor shall one people oppress another. There shall be no rulers, but only teachers and counselors. No one shall possess power over another, nor shall anyone restrict or control any other person. The earth shall be of one people, and they will all live under the emanating rays of Love, Peace and Reason. When the Age of the Daughter begins to replace that of the Son, then shall my prophet appear. And many shall call this one the Silent Prophet. Changes shall occur in the Earth which people of that time have never seen before. And there will be great renewal and upheaval.”

This Covenant seems very similar to the one given by Jesus through Saint Paul where it says, “And they shall not teach every one his fellow or every one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest.” Hebrews 8:11

So, we see that the Hopi prophecy concerning the rainbow people was that the 1972 gathering under the sign of the white buffalo calf meant that the Spirit was soon to return and the prophecy of Aradia was that “She” — that is, this Spirit –would come in Power after 36 years.

One meaning is this, concerning the Rainbow Nation:

Now the 36 years have passed and thus when we were collectively gathered in the State of Wyoming, participating in our Nation’s Hoop on the 4^th of July, She showed us the sign by which she is known to the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota Nations (collectively known as the Sioux) and that is the sign of the White Buffalo. The state flag of Wyoming is that of a White Buffalo and it declares that Wyoming is the “Equality State” because of its early championing of Equal Rights for Women. (There is a very interesting story behind that but I won’t get into those details just now.)

The last time the Rainbow Gathering was in Wyoming was in 1994. Forty-Four days after that Gathering, “Miracle” a white female buffalo calf, was born on the Heider farm near Janesville, Wisconsin. This was on August 20, 1994, and her birth signified many things to the Sioux. Some recognized it to mean that the return of White Buffalo Calf Woman (Ptesanwin) was imminent.

As soon as he got the news of the white buffalo calf’s birth, Floyd Hand – Looks For Buffalo, a Lakota Medicine Man, said (as quoted in the January 1995 issue of Spin Magazine): “For us, the Indians, it is like the return of the Christ for the white people.”

In the spring before Miracle was born Looks-for-Buffalo (Floyd Hand) had a dream of a beautiful lady in a rainbow-colored dress who said she soon would bring a message of peace and unity to mankind.

As quoted by the reporter in Spin: “‘She’s like the Madonna of Christianity,’ Floyd Hand the medicine man explained to me. ‘I had my first vision of her in 1968. I told the priest on our reservation about it, and he laughed at me. He said, We don’t see the Lady here in North America, Floyd. We only see her in Italy. … In March of 1994, Hand had a vision of the Lady again, in which she said that she would be returning when the cherries are black, which happens to be in August. Like a train on time, that’s just when she pulled up.”

Thus, the calf was born as foretold. This event caused a new spiritual revival amongst the Sioux. In the winter of 1995, during a four day praying fast (Hambleca), Standing Elk, a Ihanktowan Dakota Spiritual Advisor and Sundance Chief, was instructed in a vision to organize the first Star Knowledge Conference to be held in June of 1996. At that conference Floyd Hand announced that White Buffalo Calf Woman would return in 1998.

“In 1998 White Buffalo Calf Woman is coming back to Turtle Island [North America]. There are four omens. The First Omen was the recent birth of a white buffalo calf on a White ranch, whose hide eventually turned the other colors of the Four Nations (yellow, red and black). The Second Omen was the birth of another white buffalo calf to a Sioux rancher, but it died… The Third Omen was a third white calf, but no one is listening despite human suffering and death. The Fourth Omen will be the Star People coming and visiting in Santa Fe, New Mexico.”

The last of these signs may have been fulfilled at the Star Knowledge Conference in New Mexico in the spring of 1998. That year the Rainbow Gathering was in Arizona but even though this Spirit was in the world it clearly wasn’t yet time for Ptesanwin to make herself known to the Rainbow Nation. The visions of Native American Elders reveal that she has been present since ’98, but only the Spirit knows why she has yet to make herself known to the Native American Tribes. Perhaps it is that there are more signs that are not yet fulfilled or that the people are not yet ready.

It should be clear that even though Ptesanwin has chosen to embody herself in various emissaries from time to time, the full Reality of this Spirit is far beyond anything that could be encompassed permanently by any single human being.

So we do not know for certain when she will make herself known, but we do know, from the various signs, that this is the general time-frame for when this is to occur. Looks-for-Buffalo said further that:

“Part of White Buffalo Woman’s original prophecy was to divide the future into seven fires, or ages. She promised to return during the last fire, and bring with her a New and Final Chance for Reason. ‘During the seventh fire,’ Hand said, ‘a new Red Nation can be formed — red being the union of red, white, black, and yellow. We will be able to retrace our steps and examine what we have done wrong. We are not preserving what has been given us to care for. We are polluting the Earth. We’ve become our own enemy. During the seventh fire, the light-skinned man will be given a choice between his technologies and his nature. If he chooses his nature, there is still a chance for harmony in this world. If he makes the wrong choice, he will bring on the destruction of all of us.’” (article in Jan ’95 edition of ‘Spin’, quoting, Floyd Hand)

Chief Crazy Horse of the Oglala Sioux gave us the beginning point of this New and Final Chance for Reason: “… The Red Nation shall rise again and it shall be a blessing for a sick world. A world filled with broken promises, selfishness and separations. A world longing for Light again. I see a time of Seven Generations when all the colors of mankind will gather under the Sacred Tree of Life and the whole Earth will become one circle again. In that day, there will be those among the Lakota who will carry knowledge and understanding of unity among all living things and the young white ones will come to those of my people and ask for this wisdom. I salute the light within your eyes where the whole Universe dwells. For when you are at that center within you and I am that place within me, we shall be one.”

Crazy Horse spoke these words as he sat smoking the Sacred Pipe with Sitting Bull for the last time, four days before he was assassinated in September 1877.

So after the passing of seven generations from Crazy Horse’s vision we come to the time of fulfillment of the prophecy. A simple calculation reveals that as a generation is considered to be about 20 years (time for a human infant to grow to maturity and then have babies in turn), seven generations would be 140 years. Counting from 1877 we find that the last generation, the 7^th, began in 1997. So this is generally in accord with Floyd Hand’s vision too.

Black Elk – Oglala Sioux Warrior and Medicine Man, was born in 1863. He was alive during the Battle of the Little Big Horn and years later – witnessing the massacre at Wounded Knee, fought back and was able to rescue some of the women and children.

In 1872, at nine years of age, Black Elk visited heaven and had visions of the future. In this vision he saw that the “Hoop” (circle of spirit-power and of social unity & harmony) of the Sioux Nation, and of all other peoples as well, would soon be broken. This vision occured 100 years before the first Rainbow Gathering of the Tribes in 1972.

[*] Aradia de Toscano was born August 13, 1313 in Volterra, Italy. She lived with the peasant slaves who had escaped into the hills and forests near Nemi, Italy. She taught the Old Religion and preached freedom.

[†] At the Star Conference circa 1997-98 the Native Mothers said the Hopi fifth age had begun.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2

Underlying all physical phenomenon is a universal sea in which the force of love, manifest as the power of attraction, gives rise to the plane of physical reality. We can observe this force in all things. Those having a “New-Age” background might identify this force, or Spirit, as Gaia.[1] Baha’is refer to this Divine Feminine as the “Maid of Heaven”, the “Primal Will”. A spiritually aware person comes to recognize that this Spirit pervades all Creation, such as the rock, the plant, the animal, the human and beyond. Indigenous cultures have never lost this knowledge.

Baha’u'llah, in His Tablet of Wisdom, wrote, “Nature is God’s Will and is Its expression in and through the contingent world. It is a dispensation of Providence ordained by the Ordainer, the All-Wise. Were anyone to affirm that it is the Will of God as manifested in the world of being, no one should question this assertion. It is endowed with a power whose reality men of learning fail to grasp.” Tablets of Baha’u'llah, p. 142

In a passage from the Old Testament referring to this Spirit as “Wisdom” – translated as “Sophia” in the Greek – these verses were written,

“The Lord created Me at the beginning of His work, the first of His acts of old. He established Me before Time was, in the beginning, before He made the earth: even before He made the depths … When He established the heavens, I was there, when He drew a circle on the face of the deep … when He marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside Him, arranging all things; and I was daily His delight, rejoicing before Him always …” Proverbs 8:22-30 (RSV amended by the Septuagint Bible)

The verses reveal this Spirit as the Instrument of God’s creative process. This is the Spirit of God that “moved upon the face of the waters”. It was the first Being to be created, even before time yet existed.

`Abdu’l-Baha explained that, “The first thing which emanated from God is that universal reality, which the ancient philosophers termed the ‘First Mind,’ and which the people of Baha call the ‘First Will.’ This emanation, in that which concerns its action in the world of God, is not limited by time or place; it is without beginning or end – beginning and end in relation to God are one. The preexistence of God is the preexistence of essence, and also preexistence of time, and the phenomenality of contingency is essential and not temporal, as we have already explained one day at table. Though the ‘First Mind’ is without beginning, it does not become a sharer in the preexistence of God, for the existence of the universal reality in relation to the existence of God is nothingness, and it has not the power to become an associate of God and like unto Him in preexistence.” Some Answered Questions, p. 203

In the New Testament this Will is called the Word in the verse: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.” John 1:1-2

Again, from His Tablet of Wisdom, Baha’u’llah explains that, “The world of existence came into being through the heat generated from the interaction between the active force[2] and that which is its recipient. These two are the same, yet they are different. Thus the Great Announcement informs thee about this glorious structure.[3] Such as communicate the generating influence and such as receive its impact are indeed created through the irresistible Word of God which is the Cause of the entire creation, while all else besides His Word are but the creatures and the effects thereof.” Tablets of Baha’u'llah, p. 140

Put simply, when the Primal Will “touched” the plasma sea this created “heat” which was translated into a wave of motion. These swirling waves upon the sea consolidate into the matter which builds the universe. The “touch” itself is the origin of motion, i.e. all the known forces of the universe including gravity, electro-magnetism and the two nuclear forces.[4]

Thus God, through the instrument of the Primal Will (also designated as “the Word”) created both the electro-magnetic force to communicate the “generating influence” and the sea of embryonic matter to receive it. The Primal Will interacted upon the plasma sea through the electro-magnetic force. This generated heat which was absorbed by the sea of embryonic matter (i.e. a sea of plasma constituted of undifferentiated particles). The heat was translated into movement and the particles, under the influence of the electro-magnetic force, started to spin taking on swirling spiral relationships and from this the world of existence gradually came to be in the form we experience today.

The First Wave

Substance and Form arise from the 1^st Wave

In the background plasma sea of energy (i.e. the water) a ripple or wave occurs due to the Primal Will and this is the arising influence of the force of attraction at the atomic level. That is to say, the Primal Will’s electro-magnetic “touch” influences the water to put forth a wave – a swirl or ripple that weaves the fabric of space-time.

The verses from Genesis reveal that the Primal Will is not the water itself but is the Spirit of God moving upon the water. The “water” of plasma was influenced by the Primal Will. It stirred the one water, causing a differentiation into yin and yang and subsequently forming the atomic structure of electrons surrounding and circling a central point wherein protons and neutrons collected and “solid matter” appeared. From this structure distinct elements of hydrogen, helium etc. were produced.

Thus, at the Atomic level of existence we find this active, attractive force expressed as a type of fundamental electro-magnetism. It is a simple physicality which gives rise to substance and structure in the form of minerals that are in turn a foundation for the higher life-forms. Despite serving this function, the mineral itself is not organically alive. In terms of spirit this first level is “one-dimensional” that is, relative to living beings it is static – a pile of dirt is inert. The chemical interactions between the elements are vastly different from biological evolution. Even though the elements progress into more complex patterns they don’t automatically or accidentally become living beings.

However, even without being alive the mineral encloses a tremendous amount of energy. In order to even begin to comprehend how much energy is bound up into the atomic form by this first wave reflect upon the force let loose when the bonds of only a few atoms were broken as occurred with the use of atomic bombs in the 20^th century. The power of a single atom is truly awe-inspiring.

But we observe that Western science is overly focused on the material yang side of the equation, thus creating imbalance leading to destruction. The current instrumentation of Western science has discovered that every particle has “spin” (that is, it is moving in a circular fashion) but it hasn’t developed to the point that it can perceive the deeper reality of the wave, it only sees its effect of causing “spin”. The instruments of western science can only measure effects not causes, it takes the human mind to theorize as to the cause of the effect and then test the theory by further examination of effects. This method is only useful to a certain point because of its inherent limitation of only being able to examine effects. Therefore, Western science has yet to comprehend even this first wave and is still struggling to examine the function of atomic structure.

Spiritual science is more balanced with regard to the yin causes underlying the yang effects and thus we observe, accordingly, that the Spirit, the Primal Will, expresses itself upon the physical plane through electro-magnetic waves focused upon the sea of embryonic matter. These are like swirling waves of movement traced on the face of the deep. Even while giving rise to individual realities these waves do not lose their inherent connection to the spiritual depths which underlie them.

Three Levels Constituting the Spiral of Physical Life

The Second Wave

Capacity for Evolutional Information arises from the 2^nd Wave

At the Botanical level of existence a second wave of attraction is joined to the first wave. This 2^nd wave creates a living[5] dimension. The electro-magnetic force has advanced to a level that can be observed as a magnetism by which a plant has the power to draw sustenance, such as minerals, into itself. The beings most commonly thought of as “plants” are those which convert sunlight into living energy by a process known as “photosynthesis”. Their movement in response to the sensation of heat from sunlight exhibits a certain level of awareness. Thus we can see that the sign of life is awareness. This awareness is like the birth of spirit into a physical form and therefore all life is the offspring of Spirit.

The plant grows and reproduces itself by means of seeds which contain the life force. Even while dormant in the stage of seed the life force is intrinsic to the plant. These seeds contain plant genes made from a substance called DNA. Genetic structure is uniquely different from atomic structure. Atoms do not have genes as do plants. The combination of two waves of reality is expressed in the form of a double helix, having two strands intertwining.[6] In terms of spirit, this is a two-dimensional existence. Whereas the existence of the mineral is static and one-dimensional, plants, because of their genetic material, can evolve as life-forms, that is, even though individual plants die, the instructions for life, the code of life contained in the genetic information, is passed on through its seed. Thus the genetic substance provides a platform for the process of evolution.

The new reality brought about by the two combined waves eventually gives rise to a receptive ground for yet another dimension but first this capacity must evolve in myriad forms with the botanical evolution continuing from the earliest stages of bacteria and algae to the point wherein at its extreme limit certain plants (possibly fungi) are ready to “cross over” and evolve into amoebas. This metamorphosis is not an accident nor does it occur as a voluntary action on the part of the plant, rather this is a quantum leap brought about by the influence of a third wave traced by Spirit.

Having the potential for another electro-magnetic dimension to come into play, the genetic capacity receives the 3^rd wave. Without the evolved genetic material there would be nothing for this dimension to hook onto and thus no platform for its interaction upon the physical plane.

The Third Wave

Conscious Perception of Information arises from the 3^rd Wave

At the Zoological level of existence three waves have interlocked and merged to form a new being – the animal. The third wave of influence from Spirit affects the genetic material causing a new capacity to arise within it. A clear physical expression of the influence of the 3^rd wave is the gradual development of beings having a nervous system. The purpose of the nervous system including the brain,[7] is to register and interpret sense perceptions. The capacity that distinguishes the animal from the plant is that of the five senses. The animal becomes individually conscious of its specific existence because it can touch, taste, smell, hear and see the environment surrounding it.

With the progressive expression of its effect on the genes the 3^rd wave eventually gives rise to animal species which have sufficient brain capacity to be self-aware, that is, they are aware of their own existence. Whereas the botanical beings feel existence without thinking anything about this experience the animal beings have the capacity for distinctly individual awareness. So, while plants experience life without being conscious of it, animals have the capacity to find meaning in their experience. The level of this meaning relates to survival. Thus, for instance, an herbivore will note the appearance of another animal in its vicinity, first it freezes, then if all its senses register that this is a predator, its brain interprets the signals it has received to mean danger and puts this into action: fight or flight. The plant will also react to its environment but rather than making choices based on brain interpretations, its reactions are more spontaneous than intentional.

Thus, we observe that the electro-magnetic waves express as increasingly advanced dimensions of awareness and intentionality. At the level of the 3^rd wave this dimension has had an influence on the genetic material causing it to evolve at an entirely new level beyond that of the plant. The beings arising as a result have rudimentary nervous systems and through further evolvement classes of animal from insect all the way through to mammalian life come into being.

At the earliest level of animal evolution we have single-celled amoeba, beyond that insects, further yet amphibians, reptiles, and so on. The most advanced stages of zoological evolution brings mammals into existence and at the furthest extreme of this stage we find the primates and cetaceans. The nervous system’s evolutionary process is recorded in the creatures themselves thus in the human we find a brain stem, the reptilian brain, the mammalian brain etc.

The 3^rd wave awareness of existence has altered the genes to such an extent that a new capacity arises in the genes and this gives rise to a new being that is different from the animal even as the animal can be distinguished from the plant.

The Fourth Wave

Conscious Interpretation of Information arises from the 4^th Wave

The awareness of one’s existence ultimately provides the capacity for yet another dimension of electro-magnetism to come into play. This is the 4^th dimension, the human spirit. This spirit can only come into contact with animals whose genetic potential has reached a crucial degree.[8] That is to say: once the capacity of animal awareness has evolved to a certain point, the species at the furthermost extremity of this level whose genes have specifically evolved to receive this particular new capacity, are then enabled to advance to this next stage. This is the Anthropo-logical level. As before, this metamorphosis is not an accident nor does it occur as a voluntary action on the part of the animal, rather this is a quantum leap brought about by the influence of the fourth wave traced by Spirit upon the page of existence.

The effect of this development is that another degree of awareness can now interact with evolution. The human species has been evolving over hundreds of millions of years and the effect of the fourth wave can now be perceived most clearly as a new capacity chiefly characterized by abstract thought. This “abstract” is a realm beyond that of the physical. Philosophical thought is an example of this realm. However just as developments under the influence of the previous waves did not occur immediately but over the course of time so it has been with the fourth wave.

Ultimately the capacity for awareness brought about by the fourth wave is that the human doesn’t merely passively experience the spiritual realms but becomes consciously aware of them and thus has the opportunity to become an active participant.

Just as the plant experiences life without being aware of it but the animal is aware of life, similarly the animal experiences spiritual forces but has no capacity to interpret the meaning and make choices, it merely experiences these forces at a very rudimentary passive level and thus isn’t truly aware of them. The human has the capacity brought about by the fourth wave and thus can become aware of the truly abstract realities beyond the physical realms.

Just like there were levels, stages and degrees of advancement in prior evolutionary waves there are also phases of advancement under the influence of the fourth wave. This can get to the point where it moves beyond actual electro-magnetic waves and once it does so it is no longer constrained to physical limitations and thus the advancement can occur much more rapidly.

This is the first stage in a shift to an entirely new paradigm of existence even as the plant was the first stage in an entirely new level beyond that of the atomic. Whereas the atomic level had existence it did not have an organically alive existence, but at the level of the plant we find organic life. At the extreme of the development brought about by the fourth wave we come to an entirely new order of life beyond that of organic life, it is spiritual life.

Three Levels Constituting a Spiral of Spiritual Life

Just as there were three stages of existence in the initial category of “life” there are three stages of spiritual life that can be attained by humans while still existing in the physical plane. These three circles or waves are beyond the power of the uninitiated human mind. These spiritual realities are not subject to imagination rather there is a system of spiritual law by which their effects come into play. Nevertheless there is a certain degree of choice[9] — personal conscious choice as opposed to mere accident or instinct — which affects these outcomes. The difference then between a realized human and those who have yet to advance to this level is that a truly human being has transcended the animal condition and can choose to evolve spiritually. Furthermore, rather than this happening slowly over eons these quantum leaps can happen rapidly in the course of an individual human lifetime.

We cannot attain these levels by a mere whim but only thru preparation and reception. We cannot make a decision to force the 5^th dimension to interact with us, we can only choose to evolve. This occurs in degrees until we reach a stage where the capacity to receive that next dimension has been developed. Spiritual evolution requires belief in Spirit. Baha’is refer to the power of the next dimension as the Spirit of Faith. This is the Breath of Life whose reception Jesus referred to as being “born again of the spirit”. The combination of the human spirit and the spirit of faith is as revolutionary as the coming into existence of the gene, the double helix spiral of life, this signifies a new spiral of life.

The quotes from the Tablet of Wisdom are all from the following passage of it.

“… As regards thine assertions about the beginning of creation, this is a matter on which conceptions vary by reason of the divergences in men’s thoughts and opinions. Wert thou to assert that it hath ever existed and shall continue to exist, it would be true; or wert thou to affirm the same concept as is mentioned in the sacred Scriptures, no doubt would there be about it, for it hath been revealed by God, the Lord of the worlds. Indeed He was a hidden treasure. This is a station that can never be described nor even alluded to. And in the station of `I did wish to make Myself known’, God was, and His creation had ever existed beneath His shelter from the beginning that hath no beginning, apart from its being preceded by a Firstness which cannot be regarded as firstness and originated by a Cause inscrutable even unto all men of learning.

That which hath been in existence had existed before, but not in the form thou seest today. The world of existence came into being through the heat generated from the interaction between the active force and that which is its recipient. These two are the same, yet they are different. Thus doth the Great Announcement inform thee about this glorious structure. Know thou, moreover, that the Word of God – exalted be His glory – is higher and far superior to that which the senses can perceive, for it is sanctified from any property or substance. It transcendeth the limitations of known elements and is exalted above all the essential and recognized substances. It became manifest without any syllable or sound and is none but the Command of God which pervadeth all created things. It hath never been withheld from the world of being. It is God’s all-pervasive grace, from which all grace doth emanate. It is an entity far removed above all that hath been and shall be.

We are loath to enlarge on this subject, inasmuch as the unbelievers have inclined their ears towards Us in order to hear that which might enable them to cavil against God, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting. And since they are unable to attain to mysteries of knowledge and wisdom from what hath been unravelled by the Source of divine splendour, they rise in protest and burst into clamour. But it is true to say that they object to that which they comprehend, not to the expositions given by the Expounder, nor the truths imparted by the One true God, the Knower of things unseen. Their objections, one and all, turn upon themselves, and I swear by thy life that they are devoid of understanding.

Every thing must needs have an origin and every building a builder. Verily, the Word of God is the Cause which hath preceded the contingent world – a world which is adorned with the splendours of the Ancient of Days, yet is being renewed and regenerated at all times. Immeasurably exalted is the God of Wisdom Who hath raised this sublime structure.

Look at the world and ponder a while upon it. It unveileth the book of its own self before thine eyes and revealeth that which the Pen of thy Lord, the Fashioner, the All-Informed, hath inscribed therein. It will acquaint thee with that which is within it and upon it and will give thee such clear explanations as to make thee independent of every eloquent expounder.

Say: Nature in its essence is the embodiment of My Name, the Maker, the Creator. Its manifestations are diversified by varying causes, and in this diversity there are signs for men of discernment. Nature is God’s Will and is its expression in and through the contingent world. It is a dispensation of Providence ordained by the Ordainer, the All-Wise. Were anyone to affirm that it is the Will of God as manifested in the world of being, no one should question this assertion. It is endowed with a power whose reality men of learning fail to grasp. Indeed a man of insight can perceive naught therein save the effulgent splendour of Our Name, the Creator. Say: This is an existence which knoweth no decay, and Nature itself is lost in bewilderment before its revelations, its compelling evidences and its effulgent glory which have encompassed the universe. …”

[1] Many think of this Spirit as The Goddess or “Source”. However, since this Source Itself has a Source, It is not the Supreme Being. Therefore – as there is only one God (Who is not physcial and thus neither male nor female) – we don’t refer to the Gaia Spirit as god or goddess.

I have some concerns regarding Dr. Moojan Momen’s recent article Marginality and Apostasy in the Baha’i Community which was published in the journal Religion.

Much of it has already been answered in various Baha’i chat groups and blogs, some of which are authored by those whom Dr. Momen listed by name as Apostate.

To me the most obvious concern has to do with simple academic accuracy.

According to his own standards Dr. Momen’s list of apostates is clearly inaccurate. On his own website Momen defines apostates as those who maliciously attack the Baha’i Faith and yet many of those whom he lists as apostate have never attacked the Baha’i Faith but have merely expressed disagreement with how the Baha’i Faith is managed by its administrators.

That said, there is no need to repeat what others have undoubtedly addressed more adequately than I can. However, I have two further concerns with Dr. Momen’s public listing of apostates which I feel are worthy of mention, and to which others may not have responded.

The first has to do with this issue of claiming that persons have attacked the Faith when they merely criticized the administration, for this in itself reveals a long-standing confusion in regard to the Baha’i Administration and the Baha’i Faith, in which the two are no longer consciously differentiated from one another. Concerning this confusion, Shoghi Effendi warned:

I need not dwell upon what I have already reiterated and emphasized that the administration of the Cause is to be conceived as an instrument and not a substitute for the Faith of Baha’u’llah, that it should be regarded as a channel through which His promised blessings may flow, that it should guard against such rigidity as would clog and fetter the liberating forces released by His Revelation. (World Order of Baha’u’llah, p. 9)

It seems to me that many of those whom Dr. Momen labels apostate have, apparently out of sincere concern for the Baha’i Faith, protested the rigidity of the administration which Shoghi Effendi himself warned of in this quotation.

Over the course of the last 50 years, under the influence of an administration which has indeed become a substitute for the Faith of Baha’u’llah, this rigidity has only increased, and thus that administration has moved farther and farther away from the Baha’i Spirit.

The lack of Spirit, alone, should make it easy for the average Baha’i to comprehend that something is gravely wrong, however, the confusion has also increased, and to such an extent that many Baha’is, having been indoctrinated into this confusion, find it hard to consider themselves as being Baha’i at all once they have quit the administration. This is an indication that the oppression has become internalized.

Under such conditions in which the administration has clearly subjected its membership to false indoctrination and in which the administration is not in accord with the Baha’i Spirit described by Shoghi Effendi, how then can these apostates be considered any more apostate than the administration in Haifa itself?

The second concern gets to the root of these types of controversies:

On Dr. Momen’s website we find that he has previously written an article on the Covenant. Of particular interest in regards to the current controversy is section G – Covenant-breaker, Covenant-breaking subdivision 4 – A classification of types of Covenant-Breaking for therein he lists Apostates as one of the categories of Covenant-breakers.

Thus, according to Dr. Momen, apostates are Covenant-breakers. This alone should be sufficient cause for concern, for after labeling them publicly as apostates it is a further injustice to have formerly associated this term with the more lethal accusation of Covenant-breaker.

However, all of this takes place in the context of a still deeper injustice that has been perpetrated for the past fifty years, which has been that of both an unfairly indiscriminate indulgence in the use of this label and its combination with an over-zealous enforcement.

I am not a professional academic and do not have the inclination to make a formal study. However, I realize that at least some preliminary substantiation must be offered and for this I need only cite Momen’s own description of how the problem was treated by both Baha’u’llah and `Abdu’l-Baha as contrasted with the more recent state of affairs.

Many of Bahá’u’lláh’s writings contain passages instructing the Bahá’ís to avoid contacts with the Covenant-breakers (see passages quoted by `Abdu’l-Bahá in SoW 13:19-25). Despite this, Bahá’u’lláh seems to have made little effort to enforce such a teaching. During the whole of Bahá’u’lláh’s ministry, there appear to have been extensive contacts between Bahá’ís and Azalís. In the first few years after Bahá’u’lláh put forward his claims, there was a series of open discussions between the two groups in various towns, each attempting to win the other over. Such meetings are known to have occurred in Baghdad, Tabriz, Qazvin, Shiraz, and Isfahan at least. There is some evidence that meetings were held and letters passed backwards and forwards between the two groups until a comparatively late date. It was `Abdu’l-Bahá who moved the question of the Covenant to the forefront of the attention of the Bahá’ís and introduced the concept of Covenant-breaking. He expressed very strongly his wish that the Bahá’ís should break all contacts with the Covenant-breakers and sent envoys to try to encourage the Bahá’ís to do this. He rarely, however, imposed any sanctions upon those who maintained links. Dr. Moojan Momen (from an article on the Baha’i Covenant)

In contrast to this the situation for the last fifty years has been that once an individual or group has been labeled with the term Covenant-Breaker the other Baha’is are forbidden to associate with them or to even consider the ideas which have also been so labeled for fear of also being categorized as such.

This contrast is even greater once one realizes that whereas in the past those considered as Covenant-breakers were persons who had viciously opposed Baha’u’llah and `Abdu’l-Baha to the point of attempts at physical harm.

Dissimilarly, most of the modern so-called Covenant-breaking groups, were not labeled as such for opposing the Head of the Faith, but rather were barred from association  merely for dissent with the administrational adjuncts known as the Hands of the Cause. (Because this occurred after Shoghi Effendi’s passing but before 1963, it is a bit of a stretch to accuse them of opposing either Shoghi Effendi or the elected body known by Haifan Baha’is as the UHJ.)

Dr. Momen goes on to state in his summary that:

Since the eventual aim of the Bahá’í Faith is to unite the world, it is clear that this could not be achieved if the Bahá’í Faith itself were divided. One of the most striking of the claims made by the Bahá’í Faith is that the religion is divinely protected from schism (PUP 455-6, WOB 145).

It is a well established fact that the Baha’is have become divided, but what Dr. Momen, and indeed the entire administration, neglects to emphasize here is that the Baha’is were promised to be protected from schism only if they adhered to the Covenant, yet all the various Baha’i groups accuse each other of Covenant-Breaking.

Whether or not any of them have adhered to the Covenant has now legitimately come into question not only because of the current situation but because of its intrinsic root in the circumstances which arose as a result of Shoghi Effendi’s passing. (At that time even the Hands seemed to be at a loss to find any direct guidance in the provisions of the Covenant regarding their circumstance and so, apparently – they thought it best to improvise a solution.)

Dr. Momen continues,

Clearly this statement does not mean that it is impossible to set up a group that rejects the authority of the head of the religion since that has happened on numerous occasions. What it appears to mean is that, although it is possible for some to set up an independent group and to call themselves Bahá’ís, that group is like a branch that has been cut off from a tree, Although it may appear alive and verdant, eventually, because it is cut off from its source of life, it will wither and die.

It is interesting to note that it would seem the Haifan branch is the one that has been withering – drolly termed by some as exit by troops. It is likewise a remarkable fact that even after the passage of fifty years, several branches of Baha’i which came into existence after Shoghi Effendi’s day have not withered and died as expected. (This observation should not be taken as support for any of these other Baha’i sects on my part. I am not a member of any of them nor do I endorse them.)

One of the most clear evidences for this is the fact that the National Spiritual Assembly of the United States has recently taken some of these Baha’i organizations to court in an attempt to legally sever their identity from the word Baha’i. Surely the perceived need for this would not exist unless these groups were considered a serious threat?

The fact of the continued existence of these other sects beyond the lifetimes of the original generation could possibly contest whether they were truly cut off branches to begin with. This relates to an argument put forth in recent years by many others who weren’t members of these organizations, but rather, have left the Haifan branch: that the label of Covenant-breaking has been illegitimately used as a method of silencing legitimate dissent.

If the Haifan branch is itself apostate and the so-called Covenant-breaking sects not necessarily so very much so – wouldn’t this seriously call into question the primary legitimacy assumed by the former?

I do not expect that getting into detailed evidences within this essay would be useful for it is already somewhat beyond its scope, and with a little effort the analysis of others can be found on the internet by those interested.

Reflecting back on the first concern raised earlier: It would appear that through the ordinary course of events organization gradually becomes a substitute for Spirit. Conceivably, this occurs as a reaction to entropy. We see it in the rise of bureaucracy in Nation-states. We see it in the history of all the religions. Thus, without some intervening force, the recent decades of decline in Baha’i affairs were probably inevitable. Shoghi Effendi’s warning was not sufficient to restrain this process, the scales tipped at some point and now the substitution of an Administration in place of the Baha’i Faith has continued to such an extent that the liberating forces released by His Revelation have been increasingly fettered and it seems the spirit has fled. (Perhaps this is why Seals and Crofts were inspired to sing so imploringly hummingbird don’t fly away.) According to the testimony of those who’ve left the Baha’i organization it has ceased to be a source of liberation and instead has crossed some line, passing over into spiritual captivity and oppression.

I believe these conditions were prophesied by Baha’u’llah Himself:

What ‘oppression’ is greater than that which hath been recounted? What ‘oppression’ is more grievous than that a soul seeking the truth, and wishing to attain unto the knowledge of God, should know not where to go for it and from whom to seek it? For opinions have sorely differed, and the ways unto the attainment of God have multiplied. This ‘oppression’ is the essential feature of every Revelation. Unless it cometh to pass, the Sun of Truth will not be made manifest. For the break of the morn of divine guidance must needs follow the darkness of the night of error. … By it is meant that when the Day-star of Truth hath set, and the mirrors that reflect His light have departed, mankind will become afflicted with ‘oppression’ and hardship, knowing not whither to turn for guidance. (Kitab-i-Iqan, pp. 31-32)

If He was describing the recent history of Baha’i wouldn’t this indicate that the last five decades were a necessary phase through which the Baha’i world had to pass? Could it then be that this dark passage was in preparation for a freshly astonishing reality? (Isn’t it written somewhere that the wisdom of every command must be tested.)

In closing, I must admit of the observation that all the various Baha’i sects (and indeed all the religions) have engaged in name-calling of one sort or another and I think it constructive to reflect upon `Abdu’l-Baha’s admonition in regard to a similar matter,

O ye believers of God! The text of the divine Book is this: If two souls quarrel and contend about a question of the divine questions, differing and disputing, both are wrong. (Tablets of the Divine Plan, p. 56)

I know that many of us are hoping that, along with the rest of the Baha’is (and those of the other religions as well) we will all find it within ourselves to make a more sincere effort to just get it together and try to love one another in order that eventually these ruinous strifes will pass away.

“. . . O my brother, when a true seeker determineth to take the step of search in the path leading to the knowledge of the Ancient of Days, he must, before all else, cleanse and purify his heart, which is the seat of the revelation of the inner mysteries of God, from the obscuring dust of all acquired knowledge, and the allusions of the embodiments of satanic fancy. He must purge his breast, which is the sanctuary of the abiding love of the Beloved, of every defilement, and sanctify his soul from all that pertaineth to water and clay, from all shadowy and ephemeral attachments. He must so cleanse his heart that no remnant of either love or hate may linger therein, lest that love blindly incline him to error, or that hate repel him away from the truth. Even as thou dost witness in this day how most of the people, because of such love and hate, are bereft of the immortal Face, have strayed far from the Embodiments of the divine mysteries, and, shepherdless, are roaming through the wilderness of oblivion and error. That seeker must at all times put his trust in God, must renounce the peoples of the earth, detach himself from the world of dust, and cleave unto Him Who is the Lord of Lords. He must never seek to exalt himself above any one, must wash away from the tablet of his heart every trace of pride and vainglory, must cling unto patience and resignation, observe silence, and refrain from idle talk. For the tongue is a smouldering fire, and excess of speech a deadly poison. Material fire consumeth the body, whereas the fire of the tongue devoureth both heart and soul. The force of the former lasteth but for a time, whilst the effects of the latter endure a century.

That seeker should also regard backbiting as grievous error, and keep himself aloof from its dominion, inasmuch as backbiting quencheth the light of the heart, and extinguisheth the life of the soul. He should be content with little, and be freed from all inordinate desire. He should treasure the companionship of those that have renounced the world, and regard avoidance of boastful and worldly people a precious benefit. At the dawn of every day he should commune with God, and with all his soul persevere in the quest of his Beloved. He should consume every wayward thought with the flame of His loving mention, and, with the swiftness of lightning, pass by all else save Him. He should succour the dispossessed, and never withhold his favour from the destitute. He should show kindness to animals, how much more unto his fellow-man, to him who is endowed with the power of utterance. He should not hesitate to offer up his life for his Beloved, nor allow the censure of the people to turn him away from the Truth. He should not wish for others that which he doth not wish for himself, nor promise that which he doth not fulfil. With all his heart should the seeker avoid fellowship with evil doers, and pray for the remission of their sins. He should forgive the sinful, and never despise his low estate, for none knoweth what his own end shall be. How often hath a sinner, at the hour of death, attained to the essence of faith, and, quaffing the immortal draught, hath taken his flight unto the celestial Concourse. And how often hath a devout believer, at the hour of his soul’s ascension, been so changed as to fall into the nethermost fire. Our purpose in revealing these convincing and weighty utterances is to impress upon the seeker that he should regard all else beside God as transient, and count all things save Him, Who is the Object of all adoration, as utter nothingness.

These are among the attributes of the exalted, and constitute the hall-mark of the spiritually-minded. They have already been mentioned in connection with the requirements of the wayfarers that tread the Path of Positive Knowledge. When the detached wayfarer and sincere seeker hath fulfilled these essential conditions, then and only then can he be called a true seeker. Whensoever he hath fulfilled the conditions implied in the verse: ‘Whoso maketh efforts for Us,’ he shall enjoy the blessing conferred by the words: ‘In Our ways shall We assuredly guide him.’

Only when the lamp of search, of earnest striving, of longing desire, of passionate devotion, of fervid love, of rapture, and ecstasy, is kindled within the seeker’s heart, and the breeze of His loving-kindness is wafted upon his soul, will the darkness of error be dispelled, the mists of doubts and misgivings be dissipated, and the lights of knowledge and certitude envelop his being. At that hour will the mystic Herald, bearing the joyful tidings of the Spirit, shine forth from the City of God resplendent as the morn, and, through the trumpet-blast of knowledge, will awaken the heart, the soul, and the spirit from the slumber of negligence. Then will the manifold favours and outpouring grace of the holy and everlasting Spirit confer such new life upon the seeker that he will find himself endowed with a new eye, a new ear, a new heart, and a new mind. He will contemplate the manifest signs of the universe, and will penetrate the hidden mysteries of the soul. Gazing with the eye of God, he will perceive within every atom a door that leadeth him to the stations of absolute certitude. He will discover in all things the mysteries of divine Revelation and the evidences of an everlasting manifestation.”

There was the cycle of the mineral, the rock. There was the cycle of the plant. And now we’re in the cycle of the animal coming to the end of that and beginning the cycle of the human being. When we get into the cycle of the human being, the highest and greatest powers that we have will be released to us. They will be released from that light or soul that we carry to the mind. But right now we’re coming to the end of the animal cycle and we have investigated ourselves and learned what it is to be like an animal on this earth.

At the beginning of this cycle of time, long ago, the Great Spirit came down and He made an appearance and He gathered the peoples of this earth together they say on an island which is now beneath the water and He said to the human beings, “I’m going to send you to four directions and over time I’m going to change you to four colors, but I’m going to give you some teachings and you will call these the Original Teachings and when you come back together with each other you will share these so that you can live and have peace on earth, and a great civilization will come about.” And he said “During the cycle of time I’m going to give each of you two stone tablets. When I give you those stone tablets, don’t cast those upon the ground. If any of the brothers and sisters of the four directions and the four colors cast their tablets on the ground, not only, will human beings have a hard time, but almost the earth itself will die.”

And so he gave each of us a responsibility and we call that the Guardianship. To the Indian people, the red people, he gave the Guardianship of the earth. We were to learn during this cycle of time the teachings of the earth, the plants that grow from the earth, the foods that you can eat, and the herbs that are healing so that when we came back together with the other brothers and sisters we could share this knowledge with them. Something good was to happen on the earth.

To the South, he gave the yellow race of people the Guardianship of the wind. They were to learn about the sky and breathing and how to take that within ourselves for spiritual advancement. They were to share that with is at this time.

To the West He gave the black race of people the Guardianship of the water. They were to learn the teachings of the water which is the chief of the elements, being the most humble and the most powerful. When I went to the University of Washington and I learned that it was a black man that discovered blood plasma, it didn’t surprise me because blood is water and the elders already told me the black people would bring the teachings of the water.

To the North He gave the white race of people the Guardianship of the fire. If you look at the center of many of the things they do you will find the fire. They say a light bulb is the white man’s fire. If you look at the center of a car you will find a spark. If you look at the center of the airplane and the train you will find the fire. The fire consumes, and also moves. This is why it was the white brothers and sisters who began to move upon the face of the earth and reunite us as a human family.

And so a long time passed, and the Great Spirit gave each of the four races two stone tablets. Ours are kept at the Hopi Reservation in Arizona at Four Corners Area on 3rd Mesa.

I talked to people from the black race and their stone tablets are at the foot of Mount Kenya. They are kept by the Kukuyu Tribe. I once had the honor of presenting a sacred pipe at the Kukuyu Tribe carved from the red pipe stone of Mount Kenya. I was at an Indian spiritual gathering about 15 years ago. A medicine man from South Dakota put a beaded medicine wheel in the middle of the gathering. It had the four colors from the four directions; He asked the people, “Where is this from?” They said, “Probably Montana, or South Dakota, maybe Saskatchewan.” He said, “This is from Kenya.” It was beaded just like ours, with the same colors.

The stone tablets of the yellow race of people are kept by the Tibetans, in Tibet. If you went straight through the Hopi Reservation to the other side of the world, you would come out in Tibet. The Tibetan word for “sun” is the Hopi word for “moon” and the Hopi word for “sun” is the Tibetan word for “moon”.

The guardians of the traditions of the people of Europe are the Swiss. In Switzerland, they still have a day when each family brings out its mask. They still know the colors of the families, they still know the symbols, some of them. I went to school with some people from Switzerland at the University of Washington and they shared this with me.

Each of these four peoples happen to be people that live in the mountains.

In 1976 America had its bicentennial celebrating 200 years of freedom. Some of the Native people thought this was significant and they carried a sacred pipe bundle from the West Coast to the East Coast of this land. They said that the roads of this land should either go North-South or East-West. If they went North-South we would come together as brothers and sisters, but if they went East-West there would be destruction and almost the earth itself would have a hard time. So you all know the roads went East-West. They said then things would be lost from the East to the West and from the South to the North and that they would come back again from the West to the East and from the North to the South. So nine years ago in 1976 from the West to East Coast of this land, from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. people carried a sacred pipe bundle by hand, on foot. My aunt had dreamt 15 years ago that people that didn’t like them would throw rocks and bottles at that pipe bundle as they carried it across the land. And sure enough that came about. But, as was in my aunt’s dream, the rocks only came so close and then they dropped, and nothing touched it. When they reached the top of the Rocky Mountains, they hit a hard storm. An elderly man with long white hair said, “I will carry it now.” They had a van that went alongside the people who were walking. He got out of the van and carried the sacred pipe bundle clear through that storm. He was so cold when he got back in the van that someone touched his hair and it fell. His hair was frozen. You have to be pretty cold for your hair to freeze but that old man carried it through that storm because they said if they carried this bundle across the earth, the powers would begin to come back. They said a spiritual fire would be lit in the North and would come down the Northwest Coast of this land. When it gets to the Puget Sound, it would go inland. I think this, nine years later, is the gathering in the North, myself. That’s why I came here. This is it. We have the capacity to start the spiritual fire now, here. The old people long ago saw it and foretold it and I’m going to come to that.

So we went through this cycle of time and each of the four races went to their directions and they learned their teachings. It was on Newsweek not too long ago that eight out of ten foods that people eat on the earth are developed here in the western hemisphere because that was our Guardianship, to learn the teachings of the earth, and the things that grow from the earth. We were given a sacred handshake to show when we came back together as brothers and sisters that we still remembered the teachings. It was indicated on the stone tablets that the Hopis had that the first brothers and sisters that would come back to them would come as turtles across the land. They would be human beings, but they would come as turtles. So when the time came close the Hopis were at a special village to welcome the turtles that would come across the land and they got up in the morning and looked out at the sunrise. They looked out across the desert and they saw the Spanish Conquistadores coming, covered in armor, like turtles across the land. So this was them. So they went out to the Spanish man and they extended their hand hoping for the handshake but into the hand the Spanish man dropped a trinket. And so word spread throughout North America that there was going to be a hard time, that maybe some of the brothers and sisters had forgotten the sacredness of all things and all the human beings were going to suffer for this on the earth. So tribes began to send people to the mounds to have missions to try to figure out how they could survive. At that time there were 100,000 cities in the Mississippi Valley alone, called the mound civilization: cities built on great mounds. Those mounds are still there. If you ever go out to Ohio or the Mississippi Valley, they’re tourist attractions now. There was 100,000 cities of Native people and they were wondering how they could survive. They began to try to learn to live off the land because they knew a hard time was going to come. They began to send people to have visions to see how we could survive this time. People came on the east coast and they went across this land to the east and they were told in the prophecies that we should try to remind all the people that would come here of the sacredness of all things. If we could do that, then there would be peace on earth. But if we did not do that, when the roads went clear from east to west, and when the other races and colors of the Earth had walked clear across this land, if by that time we had not come together as a human family, the Great Spirit would grab the earth with his hand and shake it. And so if you read the treaty negotiations from Red Jacket of the Six Nations on the east coast of this land clear to Chief Joseph and Chief Seattle on the west coast of this land, they all said the same thing. Chief Joseph said, “I accord you the right, and I hope you accord me the right, to live in this land.” Always we were trying to live together. But instead of living together, you all know there was separation, there was segregation. They separated the races: they separated the Indians, and they separated the blacks. In the state of Washington it was against the law for an Asian to marry a white person up until not too long ago. There was separation.

So when they got to the west coast of this land the elders that were made aware of these prophecies said they would then begin to build a black ribbon. And on this black ribbon there would move a bug. And when you begin to see this bug moving on the land, that was the sign for the First Shaking of the Earth. The First Shaking of the Earth would be so violent that this bug would be shaken off the earth into the air and it would begin to move and fly in the air. And by the end of this shaking this bug will be in the air around the world. Behind it would be a trail of dirt and eventually the whole sky of the entire earth would become dirty from these trails of dirt, and this would cause many diseases that would get more and more complicated. So the bug moving on the land, of course I it’s easy to see now. In 1908 the Model-T Ford was mass produced for the first time. So the elders knew the First Shaking of the Earth was about to come about that’s the First World War. In the First World War the airplane came into wide usage for the first time. That was that bug moving into the sky. And so they knew something very important would happen. There would be an attempt to make peace on earth on the west coast of this land and so the elders began to watch for this. They began to hear that there was going to be a League of Nations in San Francisco so the elders gathered in Arizona around 1920 or so and they wrote a letter to Woodrow Wilson. They asked if the Indian people could be included in the League of Nations. At that time the United States Supreme Court had held that a reservation is a separate and semi- sovereign nation, not a part of the United States but protected by it. This became a concern because people didn’t want the reservations to become more and more separate. They didn’t want them to be considered nations. So they did not write back and the Native people were left out of the League of Nations, so that circle was incomplete. In the League of Nations circle there was a southern door, the yellow people; there was a western door, the black people; there was a northern door, the white people; but the eastern door was not attended. The elders knew that peace would not come on the earth until the circle of humanity is complete, until all the four colors sat in the circle and shared their teachings, then peace would come on earth.

So they knew things would happen. Things would speed up a little bit. There would be a cobweb built around the earth, and people would talk across this cobweb. When this talking cobweb, the telephone, was built around the earth, a sign of life would appear in the east, but it would tilt and bring death. It would come with the sun. But the sun itself would rise one day not in the east but in the west. So the elders said when you see the sun rising in the east and you see the sign of life reversed and tilted in the east, you know that the Great Death is to come upon the earth, and now the Great Spirit will grab the earth again in His hand and shake it and this shaking will be worse than the first. So the sign of life reversed and tilted, we call that the Swastika, and the rising sun in the east was the rising sun of Japan. These two symbols are carved in stone in Arizona. When the elders saw these two flags, these were the signs that the earth was to be shaken again.

The worse misuse of the Guardianship of the fire is called the “gourd of ashes”. They said the gourd of ashes will fall from the air. It will make the people like blades of grass in the prairie fire and things will not grow for many seasons. I saw on television not too long ago that they were talking about the atomic bomb, the gourd of ashes. They said it was the best-kept secret in the history of the United States., The elders wanted to speak about it in 1920. They would have spoken of it and foretold it’s coming if they could have entered into the League of Nations. The elders tried to contact President Roosevelt and ask him not to use the gourd of ashes because it would have a great effect on the earth and eventually cause even greater destruction and a the Third Shaking of the Earth, the Third World War. I’ll get to that in a few minutes.

So they knew after the Second Shaking of the Earth when they saw the gourd of ashes fall from the sky then there would be an attempt to make peace on the other side of this land. And because the peace attempt on the west coast had failed, they would build a special house on the east coast of this Turtle Island, and all the nations and peoples of the earth would come to this house and it would be called the House of Mica and it would shine like the mica on the desert shines. So the elders began to see they were building the United Nations made out of glass that reflects like the mica on the desert so they knew this was the House of mica and all the peoples of the earth should go to it. So they met and talked about this. They said that in the 1920’s they had written and they had not been responded to, so they said this time we better go to the front door of the House of Mica because things might get a lot worse. So elders representing a number of tribes I believe drove to New York City. When the United Nations opened they went to the front door of the house of Mica and they said these words:

“We represent the indigenous people of North America and we wish to address the nations of the Earth. We’re going to give you four days to consider whether or not we will be allowed to speak.”

They retreated to one of the Six Nations Reserves in New York State. The Six Nations Reserves are keepers of the Great Law of Peace of the prophet that appeared here in North America, Dekanwidah. And this Law of Peace is still recited, it takes four days between sunrise and noon. Each year an Indian, by memory, must recite it about this time of year. Four days later they came back and I believe the nations of the earth heard that the Indians had come to the door. And they voted to let the Indians in. They wanted to hear what they had to say. But the United States is one of five nations of the United Nations with a veto power and still they were concerned because this time the Native sovereignty was even stronger. And I believe they vetoed the entrance of the Native people.

So then they knew other things would happen on the Earth, and the United Nations would not bring peace on earth but there would be continuing and deepening confusion. And that the little wars would get worse. So they retreated to the Six Nations Reserve and they talked about this and they said the time is really getting close now 1949. They said, “We’re going to divide the United States into four sections and each year we’re going to have a gathering. We’re going to call these the ‘White Roots of Peace Gatherings’.” They began to have these around 1950. And they authorized certain men to speak in English for the first time about these prophecies.

One that I used to listen to many times, over and over, was Thomas Banyaka. He is a Hopi man. I believe he is still living. He was authorized to speak in English about what was on the stone tablets and he has dedicated his lifetime to doing this. And they began to tell us at these gatherings, they said “In your lifetime you’re going to see things happen” It was strange when they said it in the 1950’s and 1960’s but now it seems very clear. But then it was unusual. They said, “You’re going to see a time in your life when men are going to become women. The Great Spirit is going to make a man on the earth. He made him a man but this man is going to say, “I know more than the Great Spirit. I’m going to change myself to be a woman:” And they will even nurse children. The Great Spirit is going to make the woman on the earth. She’s going to say, “I know more than the Great Spirit. I want to be a man. And she will be physically a man.” This sounded strange. And maybe in a vision they saw Boy-George.

They said “You’re going to see a time in your lifetime when the human beings are going to find the blueprint that makes us.” They call that now, DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid. They said, “They re going to cut this blueprint.” They call that now, genetic splicing. And they said, “They’re going to make new animals upon the earth, and they’re going to think these are going to help us. And it’s going to seem like they do help us. But maybe the grandchildren and great-grandchildren are going to suffer.” I don’t know if you heard on the news last night in the United States now they have genetically spliced a new germ, never before released in the environment. They want to release this germ into the cottonfields of the south because they say it will rejuvenate and strengthen the cotton. They had scientists on the CBS Evening News the other night talking about it. One scientist said what the elders said in the 1950’s, that this will not harm us. We’ve put it in a lot of tests. And the other scientist said what the elders also said, no, this has never before been in the environment. We have no idea what it will do. The elders spoke of it long ago. They said it would seem harmless, but it may be able to hurt the great-grandchildren. The elders said long ago, “They will release these things, they will use them.” This is going to be released not too long from now. They are making new animals. The elders talked about this. They said, “You will see new animals, and even the old animals will come back, animals that people thought had disappeared. They will find them here and there. They’ll begin to reappear.”

They said (and I know many of you are from tribes that also have this prophecy, “You’re going to see a time when the eagle will fly its highest in the night and it will land upon the moon.” Some tribes say the eagle will circle the moon. Some tribes say the eagle will fly it’s highest in the night. “And at that time,” they say, “Many of the Native people will be sleeping,” which symbolically means they have lost their teachings. There are some tribes that say it will be as if they are frozen: they’ve been through the long winter. But they say, “When the eagle flies it’s highest in the night, that will be the first light of a new day. That will be the first thawing of spring.” Of course, at the first light of a new day, if you’ve stayed up all night, you notice it’s really dark. And the first light, you want to see it, but you can’t. It sneaks up on you. You want to see it change but it’s dark and then pretty soon it’s getting light before you know it. We’re at that time now. The Eagle has landed on the moon, 1969. When that spaceship landed they sent back the message, “The Eagle has landed.” Traditionally, Native people from clear up in the Inuit region, they have shared with us this prophecy, clear down to the Quechuas in South America. They shared with us that they have this prophecy. When they heard those first words, “The Eagle has landed,” they knew that was the start of a new time and a new power for Native people. There was absolutely nothing strong before us now. We may do anything we wish. In 1776, when the United States Government printed the dollar, in one claw [of the eagle] – if you’ve ever noticed, – there is an olive branch in this claw. They said that represented peace. The Indian elders shared with me in South Dakota that to them that represents the enslavement of black people. In the prophecies of the Six Nations people they say there will be two great uprisings by black people to free themselves. We’ve seen one about 1964. There will be a second, more violent one to come. I’ll get back to what that means in a minute. In the other claw is 13 arrows. The founding fathers of the United States said that represents the 13 States. But the elders say that represents the enslavement of the Native people. When the Eagle landed on the moon, they decided to print a special silver dollar to commemorate that. I don’t know how many of you noticed it. The original design showed the spaceship landing on the moon but at the last minute it was changed to an actual eagle. And in the eagle’s claws is the olive branch, but the arrows are gone. The elders said, “That’s our prophecy we have been released.” There was one more uprising coming for the black race of people and then they will be released and this is also going to have an effect on Native people, a good effect. There’s a whole new set of prophecies from the Iroquois people about that and I won’t have time to go into that this morning.

But we’re in that time now. We’re between the first light of a new day and the sunrise. The sunrise is about to come and when it comes up everyone is going to see it. But you know how it is in the village there’s a few people that get up early, and there are some that sleep until noon. I’m probably one of those that sleeps until noon.

They said when that Eagle lands on the moon, the powers will begin to come back to us. As an alcoholic person, I feel that one of our greatest diseases is alcoholism. Within seven days of the time of the Eagle landing on the moon, the first Native alcoholism program was started on an Apache reservation in Arizona. Within seven days of the time the Eagle landed on the moon, the Freedom of Indian Religion Act was introduced into the United States Congress. Eventually it was passed in November of 1978, signed by President Carter, making the song that Kevin sang [Kevin Locke, a famous Indian Baha'i who spends his time traveling around the world sharing the North American Indian culture through dance and music] legal to sing in every state of the United States. It was punishable at one time to go to jail for 10 years and/or a $10,000 fine for singing a song or doing a sweat. This was changed in 1978 the legislation was introduced in 1969, less than seven days after the Eagle landed on the moon. These are the physical manifestations of the spiritual prophecies that we have.

So he said at this time you’re going to see that things will speed up, that people on the earth will move faster and faster. Grandchildren will not have time for grandparents. Parents will not have time for children. It will seem like time is going faster and faster. The elders advised us that as things speed up, you yourself should slow down. The faster things go, the slower you go. Because there’s going to come a time when the earth is going to be shaken a third time. The Great Spirit has been shaking the earth two times: the First and Second World Wars to remind us that we are a human family, to remind us that we should have greeted each other as brothers and sisters. We had a chance after each shaking to come together in a circle that would have brought peace on earth, but we missed that.

Tonight they were talking on the news about the sign for the Third Shaking of the Earth. I heard it while sitting in the airport after I missed my plane. They said they’re going to build what the elders called the “house in the sky”. In the 1950’s they talked about this: they will build a house and throw it in the sky. When you see people living in the sky on a permanent basis, you will know the Great Spirit is about to grab the earth, this time not with one hand, but with both hands. Many of you of Native background may have heard “the spirits will warn you twice, but the third time you stand alone.” We’ve had two warnings, the first two World Wars, but now we stand alone in the third one. As it says in the Baha’i Writings, there will be no-one protected. When this house is in the sky, the Great Spirit is going to shake the Earth a third time and whoever dropped that gourd of ashes, upon them it is going to drop.

They say at that time there will be villages in this land so great that when you stand in the villages you will not be able to see out, and in the prophecies these are called “villages of stone”, or “prairies of stone”. And they said the stone will grow up from the ground and you will not be able to see beyond the village. At the center of each and every one of these villages will be Native people, and they will walk as “hollow” shells upon a “prairie of stone”. They said “hollow shells” which means they will have lost any of their traditional understandings; they will be empty within. They said after the Eagle lands on the moon some of these people will begin to leave these “prairies of stone” and come home and take up some of the old ways and begin to make themselves reborn, because it’s a new day. But many will not. And they said there’s going to come a time when in the morning the sun is going to rise and this village of stone will be there, and in the evening there would just be steam coming from the ground. They will be as steam. And in the center of many of those villages of stone when they turn to steam, the Native people will turn to steam also because they never woke up and left the village. And this used to bother me when I was a young man. I used to ask the elders, “Isn’t there anything we can do?” And they said, well, it’s just that way that if a person does not have the spiritual eyes to see, it’s very hard to show them. Or if they don’t have the ears to hear, it’s very hard to speak with them. We wish that we could go get them all but we can’t. It’s just that some are not going to wake up. But some will wake up .

And so they say there’s going to be the Third Shaking of the Earth. It’s not going to be a good thing to see but we will survive it. We will survive it.

And when we survive it, then there’s going to be another attempt to make a circle of the human beings on the earth. And this time the Native people will not have to petition to join but will be invited to enter the circle because they say the attitude towards us will have changed by then, and people will let us into the circle and all the four colors of the four directions will share their wisdom, and there will be a peace on earth. This is coming close. A lot of times when I share this message of the prophecies, people say, “Can’t we change it? Could we stop it?” The answer is yes. The prophecies are always “either/or”. We could have come together way back there in 1565, and we could have had a great civilization, but we didn’t. Always along the path of these prophecies, we could have come together. We still could. If we could stop the racial and religious disharmony, we would not have to go through this third shaking. The elders say the chance of that is pretty slim. It seems to me like it’s pretty slim, too. But they say what we can do is we can “cushion” it. The word we use is “cushion”. We can cushion it so it won’t be quite as bad. How do we do this? We do this by sharing the teaching that will reunite us. The Hopis in their prophecies say there will be a religion that comes here. Maybe it will be true and bring unity, or maybe it will not be true and not bring unity. If it does not bring unity, a second religion will come, and the people of this religion are known in the Hopi language as the Bahani, the people of Baha. Ni means “people of”. So I was looking for the people of Baha. I wondered who the people of Baha were. I was a Baha’i for quite a while before somebody told me that Baha’i means “people of Baha”. I thought, “Oh my God!” Here I was looking for it all these years and I never even noticed it! And I found it!

I was stubborn and didn’t want to become a Baha’i but my grandfather who passed away, you know he must have found out about it in the next realm because he came back to me four times to tell me, “Hey, look at that again, look at that again. Look one more time.” Baha, it means “light or glory”. Baha’i means “follower of the light”, or the “people of Baha”. We’ve been waiting for these people for a long time. They say they will bring a Teaching that will unite the earth. So we need to share this Teaching. They say the fire will come from the North. So here we are, in a circle, in the North, talking about the Bahanis, the “people of Bah”, and the teachings of Baha’u'llah.

When I heard about these [prophecies], none of them made any sense. Now most of it has come to pass. Last I heard on the news, they said the “house in the sky” will be put up in 1996. It was going to be put up sooner, but it’s been postponed for four years. Maybe it will be postponed again. But in not too long it’s going to go up. The earth as we know it is going to change.

Each of us carry, I believe, a sacred drop of light. In the Indian teachings, they say it takes nine ancestors to agree before conception can occur. Nine ancestors of the husband and the wife have to come together in the spiritual realm and say; “We will bring life,” before a woman can become pregnant. At that time the soul is born.

I delivered my first daughter and a man from the Blood Reserve who went to South Dakota — and was the first Blood in 82 years — he came to my house by coincidence four days before my wife went into labor. Each night we had a ceremony, and on the morning after the fourth ceremony my wife went into labor at sunrise. And that night, at sunset, my daughter was born. And I took her out, and I cut the cord, and I noticed at the sundance that what people do in South Dakota, they pass the pipe three times, and they don’t take it until the fourth time. And even in Washington I’ve heard the coming of a child is like the coming of a new pipe. When I was delivering my daughter I happened to notice that the skull came out three times, and on the fourth time, her head came out like the coming of a pipe. First I put her on the mother instantly and after a few minutes I cleaned her up and I washed her up. There was a circle of people just about like this around my wife and there were people of different backgrounds and we looked up and through the ceiling came a small drop of blue light. When it got close to the child you could not see it. That was her soul, she will carry that light throughout earth. In that is her special uniqueness as a being, a spiritual power. In that are gifts.

After we go through and then we carry it back here and it radiates to the mind but for some reason in this cycle we’ve been in the lower natures, the animal thought. But now we’re going into the human world. The mind is going to be opened up to the radiance of our own soul and the cycle of the human beings is going to come back, and something so good is going to happen on the earth that it cannot even be described. The elders say it in different ways. They say, there will be grass at that time when they make that circle and bring the peace on earth. There will be blades of grass that have not quite come through the earth. Even they will try to push themselves up to be part of that day when the sun rises. The elders explain it like this: out here, outside this building, long before there was a fair-ground here, there were Native people. They say many of these Native people in different tribes were aware of these things, and they told the children. Their children grew up.

You know, one time a scientist came to the Hopis and they said, “We want to take a piece of the stone tablets.” They said “We want to take the stone tablets to a scientific laboratory to determine how old they are.” The Hopis said, “We know how old they are”. Well, the scientists said, “We want to confirm it.” Well, the Hopis let them take a little piece, and they did that by the carbon dating method. They found these tablets were at least 10,000 years old, maybe 50,000. So when I say, “Thousands of years ago, there were Native people that spoke of these things,” that’s exactly what I mean. They told their children and thousands of years ago, their children grew up and told their children, and then their children grew up and told their children. And they spoke about the people that will live in this time.

And now it is us. We are the ones they spoke of long ago. They say to be alive, to come into creation and to live upon the earth at this time is a great honor. In the cycle of time, from the beginning to the end, this time we are in now will change the purification of all things. They say this is the hardest time to live, but it is also the greatest honor to be alive to live and see this.

In the state of Washington in 1855 they signed treaties and made 22 Indian reservations. They wanted to do it before there were problems. They thought they were advanced at the time, they had learned from what had happened elsewhere. They made 22 Indian reservations and the elders spoke in 1855 and they said, “We’re going to become weaker, and you are going to become stronger, and if you wish to break these treaties, you may do so.” They said, “But there’s going to come a time when the earth itself will rise up and purify itself and this will be announced. It will be announced by the speaking of more than 16 Great Ones on the West Coast of this land. And when the 16 Great Ones speak, the purification will have begun. There was a new [?] five years ago when Mt. Saint Helens, one of the 16 great volcanoes on the West Coast of this land, “spoke”. The Seattle Times did a special interest story. They went over to Watson Totus and Woodrow Bill. It was Woodrow Bill’s son that made this hoop that I brought here today, my good brother Randolf Bill. They asked Watson Totus and Woodrow Bill as spiritual people of the Yakima nation, “What does this mean?” What they said was so profound that they didn’t put it on page 16, they put it on the front page of the Seattle Times. They said, “This means that the races and nations of the earth should slow down and come together and talk to each other.” That’s exactly what it meant. And we had four years and four days to do that.

Four years and four days later, Mt. Saint Helens erupted the second time. That was last spring, just about this time. That was our grace period. We could have still done something really good. But now things are going to speed up. Now things are going to really happen fast. Time is going to go so fast. The more we share the Message, the more we will cushion the Third Shaking of the Earth, and the easier it will be on ourselves and others.

A good friend of mine in Montana whose grandmother just passed away last year, the last thing she said to him was “Make a place for yourself in the mountains because the air will become so hot down here,” where they were at on a reservation, that it would be hard to breath. And it won’t be long, That’s the last thing she told her grandson when she was passing. Go on the mountains and make a place for yourself. Put some things there that you can survive with. People are going to run to the mountains to survive and the Native people must be ready for this.

This initiation offered a genuine spiritual experience for the tens of thousands who attended, most of whom were Mayan. The day was filled with wonder: Lamas from Tibet and leaders of the Supreme Mayan Council bestowed blessings upon attendees; Mayan music and dance was performed on stage; and the incredible architecture of Chichen ltz was available for all to view.

The ceremony came to a climax late in the afternoon when a shadow image of the serpent appeared on the Pyramid of Kukulcan. This image appears bi-annually at Chichen Itz and is a testament to the architectural and astronomical talents of Mayan civilization. At the Equinox, the sun hits in such a way that a shadow forms on one of the pyramid’s edges in the shape of a serpent’s body. This shadow snake connects with a statue of a serpent’s head at base of the pyramid to complete the image of a holy Mayan symbol, representing fertility and re-birth. Attendees responded with meditation, chanting, and prayer, and displayed reverence for the ‘miracle.”

As we reflect on the event, it is hard not to think about the recent birth of a white buffalo in Janesville, Wisconsin. This unique appearance fulfills an ancient Indian prophecy and signifies a new period of hope and renewal for Native American culture. According to the Lakota Sioux, the birth of a female white buffalo promises unity among people and a new respect for the earth. Let’s hope both of these prophecies may be fulfilled.”

MAYAN PROPHESIES FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM

“The Mayan prophecies are being fulfilled. Some are being fulfilled even now. Some will be fulfilled on the morrow. The Mayan prophecies exist because the Mayas knew the cosmic time. They knew that in certain times it would be necessary to keep this cosmic wisdom secret. This was the purpose of the prophecy so that they might be able to communicate their secrets to the initiates of the future.

It is prophesied that initiates shall return to the sacred land of the Mayas to continue the work of the Great Spirit. Here in the lands of the Mayab, in the cycle of light, there surged a great wisdom, which would illuminate humanity for many millennia. This wisdom was given to the Mayan-Itzaes.

Now the reincarnated masters return to these lands of the Mayan to communicate with the great spirits of the Itzaes so that together they may understand what shall be the new initiation which will be put to practice; so that humanity, the reincarnated masters and the great spirits of the Itzaes may fuse into one. Then they will be able to travel like the wind, descend like the rain, give warmth like fire and teach like Mother Earth.

These masters will come from many places. They will be of many colors. Some will speak of things difficult to understand. Others will be aged. Some less so. Some will dance while others will remain silent as rocks. Their eyes will communicate the initiatic message, which is to continue through the cycles of the next millennium.

It is also prophesied that this initiation of cosmic wisdom is for future initiates. They will be young and old, men and women who will have the understanding that this modern civilization is not meeting its educational responsibilities. It is well known that this so-called modern civilization has caused a regressive effect in spiritual development.

The Mayan ceremonial centers begin to emanate the light of the new millennium, which is much needed today. Many Mayan cosmic ceremonial centers begin to beckon, with their solar reflection, the many initiates who will come to continue the work of the Great Spirit. In many Mayan ceremonial centers Solar Priests will begin to walk among the multitude of tourists. They will be touched by the Solar Priests to be initiation with the cosmic wisdom. It will be then that the initiates of the second level shall begin to work among the new initiates.” elder Hunbatz Men

“Ah the Mayan Calendars end in 2012 means the end of time. I’m sure often you have heard that enlightenment means realization of the soul (beyond space and time) in correlation with spirit (God, or creation).

So do not fear, 2012 does not mean cataclysm, in fact, its the opposite, the coming of a new Golden Age, in which we will possess the powers of the ancient ones. We will be able to levitate, manifest, and heal, and invocate magic. You will notice that more and more people are becoming interested in crystals, enlightenment, and the etheric and astral planes. At the same time, much chaos is happening now to balance the worlds karma so we can all ascend together. This is the law, and by following it, we will ascend and be freed from karma. This is why many of you may be experiencing times of turmoil. It is there for a reason, it will never happen again.

There is actual scientific evidence that our DNA is evolving, and forming new strands, and the complete evolutionary process of our DNA will be finished in 2012. With this we will be able to gain mystical wisdom unknown by the children of man, yet known by the children of light.

For you see, from many ancient sources, it describes time as being circular. The wisdom and powers of creation possessed in ancient times, will come back to us again. The ancient descended from God, a motherland, Mu, Atlantis, then spreading and migrating into the people of India, Egypt, Greece, Persia….. All of these ancient messengers carry the secret of the ancients, and all will relate to the same thing (yet they are all on different parts of the world) meaning they descended from ONE. We are coming back to this ONE, and more discoveries of Atlantis and our ancient past is emerging. Especially that of the crystals, which Atlantis used as a magical tool of the Gods.

Time is not linear. We have been taught to think of Time as only going forward, from one point to another. I think it is more accurate to think of Time as a spiral, as cycles.
